The IBM Research Fellowship Program has been envisaged based on discussions with the Head of the Departments of Computer Science and Engineering of all IITs,REGIONAL ENGINEERING COLLEGES and IISc. The scheme has been conceived to foster interest in research among the brightest of the Graduate students undergoing any of the Graduate programs in Computer Science and Engineering, viz., Ph.D., M.Sc. (Engg.) qualifying for the Masters program. It is based on merits of a student from any of the participating Institutions, viz., all IITs,REGIONAL ENGINEERING COLLEGES throughout India and Indian Institute of Sciences, Bangalore.
Terms of Reference for IBM Research Fellowship for Masters Degree:
The Masters fellowships will be given out by IRL for 18 months or 24 months depending on the course of the Institute. However, it is required that there is substantial research component in the Masters program so that at least one good conference paper or journal paper appears as part of the Masters thesis.
The Masters fellowships will be Rs. 7,000 per month plus tuition fee paid directly by IBM to the Institute and another Rs. 8,000 per year to cover incidental costs of the Masters student for books, travel etc..
For each Masters student, the payment shall be made by IBM at the beginning of each academic term (i.e., in July and January) directly to the Institute and it is the responsibility of the Institute of passing on the fellowship to the recipient.
As a part of the fellowship, IBM IRL will welcome the fellows to work at the IRL during the 2.5 summer vacation months. In case the recipient chooses this option then IBM IRL will pay the recipient a stipend of Rs. 8,000 per month plus one time, round-trip, inter-city travel costs by second class, AC train. The summer stipend will be paid directly to the recipient by IBM IRL.
At the end of every year, the fellowships will be reviewed and if the recipient is not performing to the desired expectations of the Institute and IBM IRL then the fellowship can be rescinded.
In the event that the fellow either leaves the Masters program (or is asked to leave), the remaining IBM fellowship money will be refunded to IBM IRL for its use for future fellowship and other university partnership programs.
Terms of Reference for IBM Research Fellowships for Ph.D. Degree:
The Ph.D. fellowships will be given for 9.5 months per year for 4 years; the limit of 4 years may be extended to 5 years in certain exceptional cases but reasons need to be provided by the student, the advisor, and the department. It is, however, required that there is substantial research component in the Ph.D. program so that at least three papers come out from the Ph.D. thesis.
The Ph.D. fellowships will Rs. 15,000 per month plus tuition fee paid directly by IBM to the Institute and another Rs. 10,000 per year to cover incidental costs of the Ph.D. student (for books, travel, etc.). Of course, the Institute needs to tell us the fee structure in advance for every year.
For each Ph.D. student, the payment shall be made by IBM at the beginning of each semester (i.e., in July and January) directly to the Institute and it is the responsibility of the Institute of passing on the fellowship money to the recipient.
